This strange looking cap is a good choice for a 16-18thC sailor and is based on contemporary illustrations. Firmly knit from thick pure wool and thrummed with short lengths of yarn before being thoroughly fulled, the result is a dense, shaggy cap with a surface that works a bit like thatch, keeping the head warm in even the foulest weather.
I can make these in any shade you like, I always have a wide range of undyed shades of yarn in cream, grey, brown and 'black' (v deep brown) in stock, but most dyed shades are also available. The thrumming takes a fair while on top of the basic knitting time.
Please say if you would like a specific head size, or if you would like a taller or shorter version. I make these hats to order so can easily modify my knitting to make sure you get exactly what you require.
Made to order. The way our order book is currently working, we open the shop approximately once a month for new commissions and shut it again once we have as many orders as we think we can realistically make over the next 8 weeks or so. Please be aware that your order may fall anywhere into that timescale. We'll always aim to be as prompt as we can.
