How to Make a Pointy Hat- in Pictures!
Sally Pointer
Its finally here- a Pointy Hat instruction page in pictures! There is more than one way to
do it. Use whatever works best for you, but this is a good method for a beginner.
You need approximately 250g of fine wool tops to make one of these hats.
Step One: Cover a waterproof floor with an old sheet to
soak up excess water and suds, and lay a sheet of
bubble wrap, bubble side up, on top of it. Either draw the
outline of your hat onto the wrap, or lay the template
that you will use to seperate the stwo sides of the hat
underneath.
Step Two: Start laying out the first layer, using thin even wisps of
fibre. Aim to completely cover the wrap so you can only just see it
through the fibre. This layer is the outside of the hat..
Step Three: Lay a second layer at right angles to
the first one. Keep the layers thin and even for best
results.
Step Four: A third layer is added, again at right angles to
the last one. Check that you can't see the bubblewrap
anywhere and add  a bit more if you do.
Step Five: I want a contrasting colour on the inside of
the hat, so this layer is in a different colour. I don't want
the inside colour to show at the 'seams' so I don't take it
quite to the edges.
Step Six: A final layer of the inside colour. I know that some
fibres from this will show on the outside of the hat, so I'm making
the point the original colour so that I get a slight shading effect.
(There is no real need to be this fancy, I just felt like it whilst I
was making this hat)
Step Seven: Press the layers down firmply with your
hands and sprinkle with very hot, soapy water.
Step Eight: Slide the resist layer out from underneath if
thats where it was, and lay it over the damp fibres. Press it
down well to start compacting the fibre into the hot soapy
water.
Thats one side of the hat done, ready for the
next page?
